Leading financial institution BNZ, which also provides insurance, has apologised to a woman to whom it sent an email stating she couldn’t get life insurance because she’d had post-natal depression.
An article from NZCity states that Heather Grant wanted to take out the policy a year after the birth of her son. However, she allegedly received a letter from BNZ suggesting she had been declined outright.
Grant noted it seemed unfair to tar all people with the same brush – when all kinds of people suffer from mental health issues. She’s calling for a better understanding from the insurance industry.
BNZ now reportedly said it’s not its policy to discriminate against anyone, and it will do more to train its staff.
