AMI Insurance has partnered with the New Zealand Police in a new video tackling crime prevention.
According to the firm, retail theft is one of the biggest issues facing small business store owners today. As such, it has released a video highlighting seven tips for small business owners to prevent crime. Auckland dairy owner Judy Xu, whose shop was robbed one night in October last year, features in the video. Her husband, a shopkeeper, was threatened with a knife by a group of five, who took cigarettes and about $1,000 in cash. The shopkeeper was forced to the ground and kicked, but managed to escape unharmed.
In the video, NZ Police Constable Charlie Laumatia encourages shopowners to take preventative measures.
Referring to the video, Mrs Xu says: “I hope other dairy shop owners see the video and that it stops robberies.”
Additionally, Constable Charlie Laumatia advises owners to do the following to limit the chances they’ll be targeted:
AMI general manager of small business Andrew Francis, meanwhile, said the insurer is proud to partner with the police to help shop owners prevent crime.
“I really commend Mrs Xu for her bravery in speaking out, despite what her family has been through,” Francis noted. “Small businesses are at the heart of New Zealand, making up 97% of all businesses. So it’s important we support shop owners to protect themselves and their livelihoods.”
