Pride Month is in full swing in some parts of the world and the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) has reaffirmed its support for the LGBTQIA+ community and its mission to become a completely inclusive organisation.
In February, ACC launched Te Whānau Uenuku ki ACC - the Pride Network, which it described as its first step toward better representing and serving LGBTQIA+ people. The Pride Network is an advocacy group for LGBTQIA+ people working at the ACC.
Now, ACC says the Pride Network is still in the process of establishing itself, and its existence alone is not a silver bullet. However, it is the start of a journey toward becoming a completely diverse and inclusive organisation.
“ACC is really serious about being an organisation that respects diversity,” Garth, one of the founders of the Pride Network said. “So, this network provides a forum to be able to come together to discuss things, be visible, support each other and have a voice in the organisation.
“The Pride Network also provides us with an opportunity to think about how we can support our customers who are in the rainbow communities. How can we provide information and help the organisation understand the issues that people are facing? How can we help clients in their recovery by being sensitive to their needs?”
“Our key values are making sure LGBTQIA+ people feel safe, valued and visible at ACC,” Pride Network co-founder Caitlin said.
Meanwhile, Mathias, a member of Te Whānau Uenuku ki ACC, said they want to help ACC become a fully inclusive, safe place for LGBTQIA+ people to work.
“A place where people feel that no matter who you are, how you identify or who you choose to love – you are included,” he added.
