AMI Insurance has introduced a one-year free roadside assistance offer specifically for new drivers in New Zealand, including those who are not AMI policyholders.

The benefit is available to individuals who have passed their restricted or full driver’s license within the past 12 months, and aims to provide added safety and support during their early driving experiences.

Paula ter Brake (pictured), AMI’s executive general manager of consumer brands, explained the reasoning behind the initiative.

“At AMI, we understand the excitement and challenges new drivers face. We want them to feel safe and supported when they start driving, and a year of free AMI Roadside Rescue will help with that,” she said.

AMI Roadside Rescue program

AMI’s Roadside Rescue program, which operates 24/7 nationwide, extends coverage to both policyholders and non-customers.

It offers unlimited callouts that protect drivers, their vehicles, and any other individuals driving the registered car. New drivers who qualify for the free year of coverage can access the service in cases of vehicle breakdowns such as flat tires, dead batteries, or fuel depletion.

ter Brake said the program provides a broad scope of support services, which the company claims to include more features than other similar programs in New Zealand.

“Whether it’s a flat tire or a flat battery, or you’ve run out of petrol or charge, or even experienced a mechanical or electrical failure, the AMI Roadside Rescue team can assist. The team are fully qualified, very experienced, and ready to do what they can to help people get home safely,” she said.

Eligible drivers who have recently obtained their restricted or full New Zealand license can sign up for the offer on AMI’s website. The offer became available on Nov. 4, 2024.

AMI’s roadside safety event for Canterbury drivers

In a related safety effort, AMI recently hosted a Driver Reviver event along State Highway 1 in Canterbury, inviting travellers to take a rest break and learn about road safety.

Held at the Hurunui River Rest Area, the event featured free refreshments, including barista coffee and barbecue snacks, as well as resources on preventing driver fatigue.

In partnership with the Hurunui District Council, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, New Zealand Police, Hato Hone St John, and Satisfy Food Rescue, AMI’s event aimed to encourage safe driving habits during a period when traffic volumes are typically high.

The initiative forms part of a series of safety-focused programs aimed at supporting New Zealand drivers and promoting safe travel practices on the nation’s roadways.
