AMI will hold a Driver Reviver event in Fairlie as part of its ongoing effort to reduce fatigue-related road crashes during New Zealand’s busy summer travel period.
The event, to be held on Dec. 21, targets drivers undertaking long journeys, encouraging them to take breaks and manage fatigue while on the road.
The initiative will run from 11am to 2pm at the Fairlie Rest Area on State Highway 8, between Mt Cook Road and Denmark Street.
Motorists passing through the area can stop for free refreshments, including snacks and barista-made coffee, while learning about the dangers of driving while tired.
AMI noted that fatigue-related collision claims spike by 34% in January, coinciding with increased holiday travel. Additionally, claims involving multiple vehicles rise by 15% during the summer, when driver alertness can decline due to busy road conditions and extended trips.
Paula ter Brake, AMI’s executive general manager consumer brands, highlighted the importance of recognising and addressing driver fatigue.
“We started running these events across the country in 2021 and have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from drivers who found their interaction with experts about driver fatigue to be very useful,” she said.
In the AMI team’s conversations with drivers at these events, many drivers admitted they’ve pushed through exhaustion during long journeys.
“We want to encourage everyone to plan rest stops, water, food, and bathroom breaks ahead of their journeys. There are plenty of rest areas along the major highways of the country which provide a safe space to park up and have a quick nap if you start feeling tired,” ter Brake said.
Ter Brake said the Driver Reviver events, which began in 2021, have helped thousands of drivers pause, recharge, and reassess their readiness to continue driving.
“If you see the bright green and yellow AMI flag when passing through Fairlie, be sure to stop in, take a break, and come and say hello. At the end of the day, we want to see every New Zealander arrive safely at their destination,” she said.
The Fairlie event is hosted by AMI’s Community Risk team, in partnership with South Canterbury Road Safety, New Zealand Police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Hato Hone St John, MultiCultural Aoraki, and South Canterbury Child Restraints. Fulton Hogan and Satisfy Food Rescue are also providing support.
The announcement of the initiative follows the expansion of AMI MotorHub’s services at the Hobsonville site to include general vehicle maintenance and Warrant of Fitness (WoF) checks.
The expanded offerings are now available to all motorists, not just AMI insurance customers, as part of the company’s strategy to support wider motor servicing needs.
Motorists can choose between two levels of servicing at introductory prices: a standard service for $239 and a premium service for $339. WoF inspections can be scheduled independently or bundled with servicing options for added convenience.
The facility features advanced diagnostic tools, including brake and suspension testing systems and digital wheel alignment technology. Each vehicle assessment includes a detailed report with photos and a traffic light system to help drivers prioritise maintenance needs.
In addition to its technical capabilities, the Hobsonville MotorHub includes amenities such as free WiFi, refreshments, and a children’s play area, designed to make the experience more convenient for customers waiting on services.
