HL Assurance has introduced three new travel insurance add-ons in Singapore, providing coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, a shorter flight delay claims threshold, and protection for lost frequent flyer miles.

The launch reflects ongoing shifts in travel insurance and broader trends in the global aviation insurance market, where insurers are adapting to evolving risks and consumer expectations.

Evolving travel risks and insurance demand

With 67.7 million passenger movements recorded at Changi Airport in 2024, air travel in Singapore has nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Despite this recovery, challenges such as flight delays, medical emergencies, and trip cancellations remain prevalent. Data from the aviation industry indicates that 37% of flights globally were delayed last year, underscoring the need for more responsive and customised insurance solutions.

Travel insurance providers, like their counterparts in aviation insurance, are moving away from one-size-fits-all policies, instead offering targeted protections that address emerging risks. This approach mirrors trends in the global aviation insurance market, where insurers are refining their policies to account for rising costs, shifting underwriting conditions, and changes in airline operations.

Kelvin Lim, chief executive officer of HL Assurance, said insurance must adapt to changing consumer needs and market conditions.

“Our new travel add-ons are designed to address real concerns – whether it’s ensuring pre-existing medical conditions are covered, allowing earlier claims for flight delays, or protecting valuable travel rewards,” he said.

New coverage options and market implications

HL Assurance’s “Pre-existing medical conditions” add-on expands coverage for travellers managing ongoing health concerns, aligning with a broader industry focus on providing coverage for more complex risks.

The “Reduced flight delay payout time” feature shortens the claimable delay period from six hours to three, mirroring the increased emphasis on efficiency seen across aviation and travel insurance sectors.

Meanwhile, the “Loss of frequent flyer miles” add-on ensures travellers receive compensation if cancellations result in lost loyalty points, reflecting how aviation insurers are adjusting policies to account for shifting airline reward structures and operational disruptions.

To promote its expanded travel protection options, HL Assurance is offering temporary discounts of up to 55% on single-trip policies. Returning customers can benefit from lower premiums through the company’s No Claim Discount program. Additionally, travellers purchasing policies before June 2025 will have a chance to win complimentary flight tickets.

“This is part of our commitment to transforming the travel insurance experience – making it more flexible, relevant, and seamless for every journey,” Lim said.

HL Assurance’s new travel insurance add-ons are available from March 13 as part of its Travel Protect360 plans. More details are available on the insurer’s website or through authorised agents.
