AXA Hong Kong and Macau has partnered with HK Express Airways to launch a parametric flight delay insurance program for customers who purchase the U-First service.
This initiative, supported by AXA Partners, establishes HK Express as the first airline in Asia to offer parametric benefits for delayed flights.
The U-First service, which already includes perks like priority check-in and express boarding, now extends to cover flight delays.
Travelers who purchase U-First at least 48 hours before their departure will have their flight status automatically tracked.
If delays of 90 minutes or longer occur, eligible customers can choose between a global airport VIP lounge pass valid for six months or a cash payout of HK$80 for flights originating in Hong Kong.
Kenneth Lai (pictured second to the right), chief general insurance officer at AXA Hong Kong and Macau, said the collaboration demonstrates a commitment to customer-centric innovation.
“This innovative solution features a simple, transparent, and efficient mechanism to meet customer needs,” he said.
KK Ong (pictured right), commercial director at HK Express, highlighted the flexibility this initiative offers.
“Our strengthened collaboration with insurance giant AXA ensures that U-First customers are now protected against flight delays, reducing the hassle of unexpected hold-ups,” he said.
Adelane Mecellem, regional CEO of AXA Partners, emphasised the broader implications of the initiative.
“This partnership showcases AXA Partners’ advanced expertise in travel insurance, offering a new innovative solution to improve travellers’ experience at every stage of their journey,” he said.
In addition to the Hong Kong market, AXA and HK Express have extended travel insurance solutions to customers in Mainland China and South Korea.
These products, available via HK Express’s digital platforms like its WeChat mini-program and website, include single-trip coverage tailored to travellers in these regions.
To celebrate the enhanced partnership, AXA is offering HK Express customers a limited-time promotion on personal accident insurance.
Customers can receive a 50% discount on the “SmartProtect Plus” policy, reducing annual premiums to as low as HK$183. The offer is valid until April 30, 2025, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Separately, AXA recently expanded its collaboration with Trip.com through a travel insurance product line branded as “Trip.com Travel Smart.”
The offerings include three tiers of coverage:
These plans cover medical expenses, personal accident protection up to HK$1.5 million, personal liability up to HK$2 million, and safeguards for baggage, delays, and weather-related trip cancellations.
Travelers can purchase these policies during the flight booking process or as a standalone option. Claims and policy management are available through AXA’s Emma app.
