Howden Re has announced the appointments of Paul Nicholson (pictured above, left) and Dominic Riley (pictured above, right) to its aviation and space team within the global specialty reinsurance division.
Both will join as managing directors in 2025, bringing decades of experience in the aviation reinsurance sector.
The company highlighted that the additions align with Howden Re’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in global specialty reinsurance, particularly within aviation and space.
The appointments also come as the business, led by Bradley Maltese, continues its expansion since the division's creation over two and a half years ago.
Nicholson, set to join in March 2025, has 35 years of experience in specialty reinsurance broking, including managing traditional treaty business, non-proportional programs, and MGA platforms.
Nicholson previously held senior roles at Aon, Gallagher Re, Guy Carpenter, and JLT Re, where he managed domestic and international aviation portfolios.
Riley, meanwhile, will join in April 2025 with nearly 30 years of experience in the aviation and space reinsurance sector. Riley most recently served as head of aviation and aerospace at Lockton Re and previously held senior roles at JLT Re and Guy Carpenter. He began his career in the Lloyd’s market in 1996.
Paul Smith, who leads Howden Re’s aviation and space reinsurance team, welcomed the appointments as part of the group’s effort to further enhance client capabilities. Smith joined Howden Re in 2022 after holding senior positions at Aon, JLT, and Guy Carpenter.
Bradley Maltese, CEO of Howden Re UK and Head of Global Specialty, highlighted the evolving nature of the aviation and space market.
“Howden Re is investing to be at the forefront of supporting our clients in these changes. We look forward to being able to increase Client access to Howden’s industry leading service and value creation. I’m thrilled that ‘Nico’ and Dom will be joining the team after the necessary time in the garden. The calibre of these hires shows once again that we are the home for the most entrepreneurial and innovative talent in the business. These hires also show our commitment to the aviation and space market,” Maltese said.
