The Hong Kong Insurance Authority (IA) has issued warnings about fraudulent payment requests purportedly coming from the IA.
On Aug. 7, the IA reported receiving several inquiries regarding suspicious invoices labelled “Insurance Authority Certificate” or “Capital Insurance Certificate,” which include falsified IA details and stamps.
An IA representative said that the insurance regulator does not issue any invoices for documents titled “Insurance Authority Certificate” or “Capital Insurance Certificate” and it does not issue insurance policies as indicated by these documents. The regulator has reported these cases to the Hong Kong Police Force.
The IA also said that all legitimate fees and levies it has collected are detailed on its official website. It advised the public to verify any suspicious payment requests by calling its general enquiry hotline at 3899-9983. Suspicious cases should also be reported to the Hong Kong Police Force.
The IA also recently alerted the public about a fraudulent website with the domain name “https[:]//www[.]hgjyym[.]com/”. This site falsely claims to be the official website of Sun Life Hong Kong Limited (Sun Life Hong Kong), an authorised insurer in Hong Kong.
Sun Life Hong Kong has confirmed it has no affiliation with the fraudulent website.
The IA advised individuals who have provided personal information or conducted transactions through this website to contact Sun Life Hong Kong at (852) 2103-8928 and report the case to the Hong Kong Police Force.
The regulator’s website includes a complete list of authorised insurers in Hong Kong on its Register of Authorised Insurers page.
The IA also recently highlighted concerns about fraudulent insurance promotions involving a South Korean individual, Kang Seung-min, who allegedly promotes counterfeit products and investment schemes under the name “Sun Life” via YouTube.
The insurance watchdog said these promotions are not linked to Sun Life Hong Kong, which has confirmed no association with Kang or his activities.
It urges individuals who have shared personal details or engaged in transactions with Kang to report the matter to Sun Life Hong Kong at (852) 2103-8928 and notify local law enforcement authorities. The public is also encouraged to check the Register of Licensed Insurance Intermediaries on the IA’s website to verify the legitimacy of insurance agents.
