Clark will report to the company’s board of directors as well as to Jack Howell, Zurich’s CEO for Asia-Pacific (APAC). He succeeds Philip Smith, who left the company at the end of September.
With almost 30 years’ experience in the insurance industry, Clark relocated from his home country of South Africa and spent close to 20 years in the Asia-Pacific region. He joins Zurich from Prudential, where he was CEO of its Vietnam arm. He was previously with AIA, where he had stints heading its Vietnam and Philippines operations.
“Steve has a deep understanding of the local markets and a natural ability to build long lasting relationships with distribution partners,” said Howell. “We have strong ambitions for Malaysia, which is an important market in Zurich’s APAC strategy. We are excited about Malaysia as its fundamentals are strong – promising economic prospects, sizeable middle class, and a young and under-insured population. I am confident that with Steve on board, we will be able to expand our business, strengthen our distribution and drive customer engagement.”
