Global insurance group XL Catlin has promoted Tim Powell to chief underwriting officer for international financial lines (IFL), effective March 01.
Powell is currently XL Catlin’s IFL product group leader for Asia-Pacific, where he leads a team of underwriters based in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.
According to a statement by the insurer, he will be responsible for the underwriting performance of XL Catlin’s financial lines portfolio across all markets outside of North America. He will also develop and implement the overall strategic objectives for this critical line of business and oversee the development of new products and services to meet changing client needs.
Powell will be based in London, beginning May 01, and he will report to Jason Harris, CEO for international insurance. He will also become part of XL Catlin’s international leadership team.
“Tim has effectively managed large, diverse portfolios and has in-depth experience with the different distribution channels,” Harris commented on the appointment. “I’m confident that Tim’s technical expertise, strategic perspective and inclusive leadership style will be instrumental as we continue to strengthen our position as a leading IFL market.”
In 2009, Powell joined Catlin Australia after stints at Allianz, AIG, and Sedgwick. Following the XL Group’s acquisition of Catlin in 2015, he was tasked with building the financial and professional risks portfolio in Australia, as well as its underwriting infrastructure.
