Sompo
Canopius has appointed Mark Newman as chief executive officer for the Asia-Pacific and Middle East & North Africa regions. He will be based in the insurer’s Singapore office and will report to
Mike Duffy, chief underwriting officer.
Having had an office in Singapore since 2009, Sompo Canopius has been operating in the region for quite some time. Newman’s appointment is part of the company’s increased focus on expanding the business in the region. Linus Phoon will remain as head of reinsurance for Asia.
Newman has 30 years’ experience in insurance, and has spent the past 16 years in Asia. He has worked with Arab Commercial Enterprises in Jeddah and Alexander
Howden in London and Mexico. He later became senior vice president at J&H in 1991. Most recently, he was head for Asia and deputy CEO for Asia-Pacific at
XL Catlin.
Duffy commented on the appointment: “It’s important for us to invest in talented people as we work to move Sompo Canopius onto a more nimble footing. Mark is well known and respected across the
Asia Pacific Middle East and North Africa markets and he will bring a new level of insight and a different perspective to our business in those areas.”
