SBI General Insurance and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have teamed up in a corporate social responsibility (CSR) venture, aiming to introduce an innovative Thermal Therapy Device, according to a news release.

The collaboration targets a breakthrough in breast cancer treatment, particularly for advanced cases, according to the release. The technology jointly developed at IIT Madras offers an indigenous, cost-efficient remedy for advanced-stage breast cancer patients. The pivotal feature of the Thermal Therapy Device lies in administering hyperthermia alongside radio and chemotherapy, as per a recent Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study, which highlights breast cancer’s prevalence, constituting 28.2% of all female cancer patients in India.

The challenge of late-stage diagnosis, limited treatment options, and financial constraints is addressed by the Thermal Therapy Device, supported by SBI General Insurance, ensuring affordability, patient comfort, and treatment efficacy during hyperthermia sessions.

“Every four minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in India. We are dedicated to addressing this challenge, and our collaboration with IIT Madras marks a significant step in driving healthcare innovation,” said Kishore Kumar Poludasu, managing director and CEO of SBI General Insurance. “Together, we aim to contribute to the broader goal of promoting indigenous solutions and innovation in healthcare, making a positive impact on the lives of breast cancer patients.”

“With the support of SBI General Insurance, this breakthrough technology developed at IIT Madras has been transformed into an affordable ‘Make in India’ Thermal Therapy device, set to revolutionise advanced breast cancer treatment in the country,” said  Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, dean for alumni and corporate relations at IIT Madras.
