Regulator issues warning against fraudulent AIG website

Insurance News

By Kenneth Araullo

The Insurance Authority (IA) of Hong Kong issued a warning regarding a fraudulent website that falsely claims to represent AIG Insurance Hong Kong Limited, a legitimate insurer in Hong Kong.

AIG Insurance Hong Kong Limited has disassociated itself from the website, confirming no affiliation with it.

Following the discovery of this deceptive site, the matter has been escalated to the Hong Kong Police Force for a detailed investigation. The IA advises individuals who may have disclosed personal information on this website or engaged in insurance transactions through it to contact AIG Insurance Hong Kong Limited directly. Additionally, such incidents should be reported to the Hong Kong Police Force.

In Hong Kong, any entity conducting insurance business must receive authorization from the IA, as mandated by the Insurance Ordinance (Cap. 41). The IA maintains a comprehensive Register of Insurers on its website, where the public can access the full list of authorized insurers operating in Hong Kong. This measure ensures transparency and protection for consumers engaging with insurance providers in the region.
