More than 13,000 people participated in a fun run to raise insurance awareness in Malaysia, organised by the National Association of Malaysian Life Insurance and Family Takaful Advisors (NAMLIFA) Sibu branch.
The race, known as ‘Insurance Awareness Torch Run – Run For Insurance 2018’, was held in celebration of World Insurance Awareness Day, The Borneo Post reported. The run, which began at Sibu town square, was flagged off by Sibu municipal council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King.
Among the runners were NAMLIFA president KP Lim, representatives of various sponsors and government agencies, as well as members of the police and armed forces. Of the over 13,000 runners, 2,000 came from outside Sibu, the organising committee said.
According to Lim, the run is one of NAMLIFA’s contributions to the growth of the Malaysian insurance industry. Bank Negara Malaysia has set a goal of 75% insurance coverage for the entire population by 2020.
However, half of Malaysia’s population has no form of insurance coverage or knowledge of risk management.
“Any emergency arising due to death, disability or loss of working capability will result in severe financial losses for families, leading to social problems for the country,” Lim said.
