Careful drivers will begin receiving discounts on their motor insurance premiums starting January 2020, according to Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Loke said that the scheme will allow drivers who did not commit any traffic offences to reap rewards in the form of lower insurance premiums or additional discounts on their no claim bonus, The Sun Daily reported.
Discussions between the Transport Ministry and the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) were fruitful, with the latter agreeing to the move to boost road safety, he said. Furthermore, the process of updating and sharing of driver information between the Road Transport Department’s MySikap records system and the Royal Malaysian Police are in its final stages.
“All mechanisms needed to provide discounts are in the final stage of preparation and it will be announced by the end of the year,” Loke told the media at the sidelines of the 60th Road Safety Council of Malaysia annual general meeting in Sepang on October 08.
Aside from the insurance discount for safe drivers, Loke also mentioned plans to regulate school bus services in Malaysia, following reports of over 50,000 unlicensed vehicles being used to transport children to school.
Special regulations, based on a framework provided by the Land Public Transport Agency and the Road Transport Department will be implemented. These regulations are similar to those that govern e-hailing services, the report said.
