Earthquakes ranked as the top disaster concern among Japanese people, a survey by JI Accident & Fire Insurance found, as reported in an article by nippon.com.
Conducted in early July, the survey found that about 60.3% of the respondents were concerned about disasters. Most of the respondents of all ages expressed slight concern about disasters with those who said that they were very concerned mostly belonging to the 40 to 49 age bracket while those who were not concerned at all mostly came from those between the ages of 20 to 29.
Notably, about 88.9% of the respondents expressed concern about earthquakes, which was followed by wind damage and flood damage. The most common answer among the respondents when they were asked about what they were worried about losing in the event of a disaster were their life and health, with 66% of the respondents saying so.
This was followed by the life and health of their family and friends with 66.4% and their house, belongings, car, and other property with 63.8%. The thing that the respondents were least worried about losing in a disaster was their work or community role.
The top kind of information that the respondents would like to receive before a disaster occurs was the recommended number of things to stockpile, closely followed by hazard maps and types of evacuation orders and how they can be checked.
During a disaster, the respondents said that they would like to receive the information about how to confirm someone’s whereabouts. This was followed by information about evacuation sites and the routes they could take to get there as well as the support or compensation packages that they will receive from public organizations.
