Non-life insurer Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance has increased its multilingual customer support services for motor insurance from three languages previously to a total of 15.

Since 2016, the insurer has provided customer service support in Japanese, English, and Chinese to serve the growing number of foreign tourists in Japan. However, Sompo Japan said that there has been a rise in frequency of car accidents involving people who could not speak Japanese or the other two languages well, so the insurer increased its language offerings.

Starting this month, twelve additional languages will be added: Korean, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, German, Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Nepalese, and Russian.

The company added that aside from customer service representatives handling initial contact from claimants in case of a car accident, other services, such as out-of-court settlement and negotiations, will also be offered in these 15 languages.
