Nina Aguas (pictured), executive chairwoman of Philippines-based Insular Life Assurance Company, has been named to Forbes Asia’s Power Businesswomen list.
According to the magazine, the list highlights 25 accomplished women who are playing a significant role in shaping Asia’s business landscape. They were selected for their achievements and track records in business, it added, and they are defying stereotypes and breaking down barriers across industries.
Aguas is the sole Filipino and insurance executive who made the list, which also includes Singapore’s Tan Hooi Ling, co-founder and COO of decacorn Grab – which has been entering the insurance industry in recent years.
After spending around 30 years holding senior management roles in Asia, Australia, and North America for major banks such as ANZ and Citi, Aguas became CEO of Insular Life in 2016, before becoming executive chairwoman in 2018.
Under Aguas’ leadership, the 109-year-old insurer saw premium income in 2018 rise 18% to PHP14 billion (US$267 million), according to Forbes Asia. In March, Aguas spearheaded the launch of the InLife Sheroes program, in partnership with the World Bank, to educate women in the Philippines on issues such as financial literacy and health. She also led several efforts to boost the company’s digital capabilities.
