FWD Life Philippines has appointed Jose Cuisia Jr., the country’s former ambassador to the US and former central bank governor, as chairman of its board of directors.

Cuisia was previously appointed as a member of the insurer’s board and special advisor in 2016 before being elevated to the chairmanship. According to the firm, he will now play a pivotal role in its goal of becoming a leading insurer locally, the Manila Times reported. He succeeds Julian Lipman, who stepped down to take another role within FWD.

“We are truly honoured that Ambassador Cuisia has taken on the role as chairman of the board. This is another step toward strengthening our game-changer position in the insurance industry,” FWD Life president and CEO Peter Grimes said in a statement.

From 2010 to 2016, Cuisia was the Philippine ambassador to the US. He was also governor of the country’s central bank from 1990 to 1993 and administrator of the Social Security System from 1986 to 1990.

Holding an MBA degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he has held several positions in various banks and financial institutions, including the chairmanship of Starr International Insurance’s Philippine arm.
