Bernd Pischetsrieder is stepping down from Munich Re’s supervisory board in 2019, and a familiar face has been named to take over as chairman.

Former Munich Re chief executive Nikolaus von Bomhard, who left in 2017 and was succeeded by current CEO Joachim Wenning, is making a comeback next year after being recommended by the nomination committee to be elected to the supervisory board. His predecessor, who is not standing for re-election, remains as chair until the Annual General Meeting.

“Nikolaus von Bomhard was a member of the board of management of Munich Re from January 2000 to April 2017, and took over as its chairman in January 2004,” noted the major reinsurer when it made the announcement. “As a universally acknowledged expert and industry professional, he has the comprehensive knowledge of the business that is so important for the work of the supervisory board.”

The Munich Re veteran has been the chair of Deutsche Post DHL Group’s supervisory board since April 2018.

Meanwhile digitalisation expert Karl-Heinz Streibich has been nominated for appointment to the Munich Re supervisory board. Currently the president of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech), Streibich also served as chair of the management board of Software AG from October 2003 to August 2018.
