A fake insurance company in Noida, India, has been raided by police, leading to the arrest of 33 individuals. They’re accused of victimising over 80 people with fraud.

The establishment was raided twice, after a resident sought the help of the Gujarat Police, accusing the company of duping him out of INR3.7 million (US$53,700) over a period of three years, Times of India reported.

The arrested individuals, 16 women and 17 men, worked as telesales personnel for the firm for the past three to six months, the police said. The directors and owners of the bogus company had not been arrested as of Friday afternoon.

A total of six complainants emerged against the company, and the raids yielded files for 85 victims, who were located all over India – Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and other regions.

According to Police Superintendent Vaibhav Krishna, up to INR10 million (US$145,000) was fraudulently collected over the past six months. While no cash was recovered on the spot, the company’s bank accounts have been frozen.

Earlier, five people were arrested in a raid of the company’s branch in Aligarh City, also in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
