Sompo Japan Insurance and European risk technology firm Greater Than have partnered for a proof-of-concept exercise that aims to develop services for customers who seek to achieve more sustainable operations through carbon neutrality.
According to Sompo, the demand for decarbonisation from small and medium-sized enterprises is increasing, but their know-how and human resources are limited. The insurer’s in-house demonstration experiment found a correlation between safe driving and greenhouse gas emissions. Following this, the firms will launch a platform targeted at automobile fleet operators using 10 or more vehicles.
The exercise seeks to provide a way for companies to visualise their carbon emissions and a mechanism to calculate reduced emissions for each business. Through an application on the driver’s smartphone, the platform measures CO2 emissions as well as driving behaviour, including sudden acceleration and braking. The results will be visible to both driver and fleet operator.
According to Sompo and Greater Than, the platform can help businesses become more environmentally sustainable by reducing the risk of traffic accidents, lowering costs and limiting emission of greenhouse gases.
The platform is expected to launch for select areas in Japan in December and for the rest of the country in March 2023.
“We're pleased to work with Sompo Japan in developing new service integrated with mobility and CO2 analysis beyond insurance,” said Shinya Nakagawa, global director for automotive and new mobility, Greater Than. “The mobility in Japan is under transformation, and Sompo Japan is at the forefront of making eco-friendly driving centre-court.”
“Testing and evaluating Greater Than's real-time risk and eco score analysis during this spring has given us great insight into developing new services that we will offer to our clients in the near future,” said Masamitsu Harada, manager, personal lines product development department, Sompo Japan Insurance.
