A majority of UK employees would forgo minor monthly indulgences in exchange for better health and wellbeing benefits, according to research conducted by Unum UK, a specialist in employee benefits.

The study revealed that 81% of employees would trade small monthly treats for health-focused benefits. Among those surveyed, 30% indicated they would give up a coffee and pastry costing £3 to £5 per month, while 20% would exchange a supermarket takeaway meal for two worth £11 to £15 per month.

Mark Till, CEO of Unum UK, noted that the findings highlight a shift in employee priorities. He suggested that several factors are influencing this trend.

“Whilst motivations may vary, from past experience of the positive outcomes of timely support for everyday health concerns to current difficulties accessing health services through the NHS, our research has repeatedly shown that employees are putting increasing importance on their overall health, and now we can see that in monetary terms,” he said.

The study also found that nearly 19% of employees would forego a subscription to a video streaming service, such as Netflix, costing £6 to £10 per month in favour of health and wellbeing benefits. Younger workers aged 18 to 34 were the most likely (25%) to make this trade.

Till pointed out that the evolving workforce, with younger talent entering alongside employees across all age groups prioritising health benefits, presents an opportunity for employers.

By offering benefits packages that focus on health and wellbeing, businesses can meet employee expectations and foster a supportive workplace culture, he said.

The timing of this trend is particularly relevant as the NHS faces added pressures during the winter months. Many employees are juggling work responsibilities with personal challenges, making workplace health benefits a critical factor.

Employers that offer comprehensive health and wellbeing packages can better support their workforce, contributing to employee health, engagement, and productivity.
