Insurance giant
Allianz has revealed the top country destinations where British travellers subsequently make an insurance claim.
Spain topped the list after one in six claims from UK holidaymakers was made in the Iberian country last year, Allianz Global Assistance said, as reported by the
International Travel and Health Insurance Journal (ITHIJ).
France and the US, both with one in 10 claims, ranked second and third respectively. The UK followed at fourth place while Italy featured fifth.
Allianz Global Assistance, which sampled 10,000 travel insurance claims it received in 2015, said that most claims were made as a result of travel cancellations.
Other reasons were medical, personal possessions and money, travel delay, missed departure and curtailment, the
ITHIJ reported.
The insurance firm also discovered that one in five of UK holidaymakers buy travel insurance in the last minute.
“Holidaymakers should apply a hard and fast rule: purchase travel insurance at the same time you book your holiday,” Paul Doran, head of travel operations for Allianz Global Assistance in the UK, was quoted as saying in the
ITHIJ report.
“It won’t cost you anymore and will save you considerable heartache if you unexpectedly have to halt plans due to a serious injury or illness, or worse still, the death of a loved one or someone associated to your travel plans,” Doran added.
