Savvy insurer Emerald Life has offered free wedding insurance to the police officers who got engaged at Pride in London last month to “ensure their big day goes as smoothly as possible”.

Photos of PC Sam Philpot and PC Martin Coughlan went viral on social media around the world last month after Philpot proposed in the middle of the Pride parade.

Gay Times has reported chairman of Emerald Life Steve Wardlaw approached the officers after watching the moment to offer the company’s wedding insurance services free of charge.
“I couldn’t not reach out to them and offer this simple gesture,” he said.

Coughlan said the proposal was totally unexpected.

“We haven’t started planning anything yet as both have been pretty much working flat out since,” he said. “A massive surprise was how viral the news has gone.”

Emerald Life is a recently launched insurer specialising in policies for the UK’s LGBT community. As well as specific policies the company also focuses on a better customer experience for its members, particularly around avoiding assumptions commonly made by insurers regarding the gender of a customer’s partner. Emerald Life launched in March this year.
