Reinsurance, wholesale and specialty broker Cooper Gay has made a series of appointments in the UK to strengthen its senior team.

The global brokerage has appointed Simon Hirst-Marsden as head of energy technical upstream and Tony Rastall as divisional director of energy, specialising in onshore construction risks.

Hirst-Marsden and Rastall will report to Richard Haines, who has been appointed as managing director of the energy division.

Haines and Rastall will take up their roles immediately while Hirst-Marsden will join Cooper Gay in October.

“Richard has been instrumental in the success of our market leading energy offering,” said group CEO Steve Hearn.

“I am certain that under his leadership we will further enhance our position in this sector,” he added.

Haines joined Cooper Gay in 2003 and became a partner in 2009. He began his career at Sedgwick Group and previously managed the onshore energy team at NMB.

Hirst-Marsden most recently worked at Lloyd & Partners and also held senior roles at ACE Europe, Marlborough, Aviva and the Lloyd’s Central Claims office.

Rastall, a 40-year industry veteran, was previously a partner at Arthur J. Gallagher after spending 19 years at Jardine Lloyd Thompson.

“Tony brings an exceptional level of experience, expertise and client understanding to Cooper Gay and will be key to the realisation of our ambitions in this class,” Hearn said of Rastall.

As for Hirst-Marsden, Hearn described him as an “excellent claims professional who has built a reputation across the market based on expertise and professionalism.”
