Almost 4000 Quebec properties have registered as flood damaged, opening the gates for compensation assistance from the provincial government – but there will be caps on payments.

Homeowners and renters can receive compensation for flood-related damages and expenses, although limitations apply.

The province’s “general financial assistance program regarding actual or imminent disasters” will provide homeowners with up to $159,000 for repairs to their home and access route to their property, as well as additional payments for any floodwater mitigation efforts, replacement of goods, and costs related to moving expenses and emergency lodging.

There are limits to this government reimbursement, however. The payouts to replace specific items have restrictions – for instance, the replacement of a dishwasher is capped at $400. The compensation to replace clothing is limited to $1,500, while for TVs the limit is at $450.

Cheques covering the costs can be issued in less than three days.

If an entire house has been written down as a loss, the government will pay a maximum of $159,000 to rebuild it, with up to $25,000 for demolition costs.

Montreal Gazette reported that over 700 people had applied for the compensation as of Tuesday. More than 3,800 private and commercial properties in Quebec had been listed as damaged as of Wednesday afternoon, the provincial public security ministry confirmed, and over 2,700 people were displaced from their homes.
