The Co-operators announced yesterday that it has contributed funds to support the redevelopment of a multipurpose facility in downtown Guelph.
The insurer provided the non-profit community hub 10 Carden with $50,000 toward the revitalization of the mixed-use co-working space. Once the redevelopment is complete, 15,000 sq ft. will be available for “community collaboration, strengthening local resilience through co-working, social innovation and entrepreneurship by community-minded individuals and groups,” a release said.

Specifically, The Co-operator’s contribution will help 10 Carden with the integration of key green infrastructure components into the project. Components include a rainwater harvesting system, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, an energy-efficient LED lighting system, and active transportation features to encourage cycling.
A release noted that there will be opportunities for Co-operators staff members to volunteer with 10 Carden. The release also mentioned that once the center is completed, The Co-operators will be welcome to use the space for events.
“This innovative project will serve not only as a co-working, event and meeting space for local people and community service organizations, but as a community hub in the downtown core,” Co-operators president and CEO Rob Wesseling said. “We’re pleased to support the green features of this building and be part of this unique community-building initiative right here in our hometown.”
10 Carden’s facility will have shared rooms available for co-working events and meetings. Special packages will be made available to members organizations that have signed up with 10 Carden. Non-members can rent space at non-member rates.
