Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) helped provide volunteers with speed reader boards last week in a campaign to promote safe speed limits.
Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) groups were stationed across Manitoba, armed with MPI equipment to raise awareness of posted speed limits in their respective communities. The initiative ran from May 01 to 06.

According to
Collision Repair Magazine, the data collected by participating volunteers will be shared will local law enforcement to help in the authorities’ enforcement efforts.
“COPP volunteers play a key role in helping keep their communities safe,” said Crown Services Minister Ron Schuler. “Such activities would not be possible without the work of these dedicated volunteers. These high visual, road-side activities are very effective in sending a road safety message to all motorists.”
“The purpose of ‘Spotlight on Speed’ Week is to raise awareness about this high-risk driving behaviour and for drivers to self-evaluate and adjust accordingly,” said MPI vice-president of Loss Prevention and Communications Ward Keith.
The initiative precedes the fourth UN Global Road Safety Week, from May 08 to 14 – this year’s theme is on speeding. Countries from around the globe, Canada included, are focusing on speed and what can be done to address this factor when it comes to vehicular-related collisions and injuries.
