Insurance is a requirement for visas issued to visiting parents and/or grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Visas provide a temporary resident with a permit that allows the applicant to stay in Canada for visits of up to two years.
The Super Visa program, launched in late 2011, offers a multi-entry visa that is valid for up to 10 years. Due to it saving applicants from having to renew their status at each visit, it became a huge hit. Only those who are parents or grandparents of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can apply through the program. Applicants must also be able to provide proof that their child, or grandchild, meets the minimum income threshold for them to qualify.
According to a release, the Super Visa insurance policies were set by the Canadian government in an effort to reduce government spending for the financial support and healthcare costs of visa recipients.
