The
Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) on Friday announced it is bringing back its portable earthquake simulator to Ottawa, where the bureau first began its earthquake awareness campaign.
Dubbed the Shake Zone, the simulator recreates the experience of being in the midst of a magnitude 8.0 earthquake. The simulator will be set up for the public to experience on May 29 and 30. IBC personnel will be on-hand to guide participants and to educate them about the importance of being prepared for tremors.
According to the IBC, the Ottawa – Montreal – Quebec City corridor and southwestern British Columbia are the most vulnerable regions to a massive earthquake event.
“As a partner in emergency preparedness, IBC both educates in advance and deploys when natural disasters strike,” the bureau said in a release.
The IBC launched its earthquake awareness campaign back in October 2016, with the tour’s first stop in Ottawa. The bureau last year also helped organize a major earthquake preparedness drill in British Columbia.
