An insurance company’s latest TV advertisement will have viewers rooting for a balloon as it navigates a world filled with deadly, sharp objects.

Sonnet Insurance’s Balloon ad is an animated film produced by Nexus Studios, under the direction of award-winning duo Alan Smith & Adam Foulkes.

The ad follows the journey of a balloon as it narrowly avoids getting burst in a series of hair-raising encounters that could be found in regular life settings. Broken window panes, wrought iron fences, cacti, and even several pairs of barber’s shears – the balloon manages to escape each and every nail-biting encounter only to run into another. The entire one-minute, 46-second short is set to the optimistic tune of “What’s the best that can happen?”

“This is a happy commercial that subverts the idea that an insurance company can’t be positive while also revealing the hidden dangers of everyday life,” Foulkes told Animation World Network. “There are very few lyrics to the soundtrack so the visuals really had to carry the story in order to ensure the viewer could identify with our floating hero.”

“Despite the viewer knowing that it is just a blissfully unaware balloon, there is something in its smiling face that makes you root for it and really ask what is the best that could happen!?” added co-director Smith. “We love taking small and inconspicuous concepts and expanding them into epic tales.”
