Almost nine in 10 Canadians (88%) regard their home as their most important possession, according to a recent poll commissioned by Allstate Canada. Results also found that family keepsakes and personal technology items rank highly among the possessions thought to be the most important.
“For Canadians, our possessions are often more than just the ‘stuff’ we own - they represent our memories, our hobbies, our keepsakes, and the things we worked hard to achieve,” said Dave MacInnis, vice president of product operations, Allstate Canada.
“What we learned from our poll is that while Canadians care about their belongings, there are particular items that are closer to their hearts and those are the items that matter the most,” he added.
Data came from a survey of 1,801 Canadians completed online from April 3-7, 2017, using Leger’s online panel, LegerWeb.
Keepsakes and family heirlooms also ranked highly, as 78% consider these to be important. Some 42% of Canadians said these would be the first items they would grab in the event of an emergency, aside from family members and pets.
In particular residents of New Brunswick consider these items to be even more important than their home, with 83% indicating their personal keepsakes and family treasures are important to them, versus 75% who said the same about their home. Millennials in Nova Scotia (93%) and New Brunswick (84%) were also more likely to say that these items are important, while millennials in Alberta were less likely to say the same (70%).
