Marsh CEO Scott Leney will spend a night sleeping rough in Sydney in a bid to raise $25,000 for Vinnies.

Taking part in the annual Vinnies CEO Sleepout, alongside 140 other CEOs, Leney will spend the night sleeping rough at Sydney Cricket Ground on June 22 to raise funds and awareness around homelessness in Australia.

This will be Leney’s fourth year taking part in the sleepout, but he said the event remains “confronting” and offers valuable time to reflect.

“You wouldn’t possibly compare it to spending a night sleeping on the streets and that is not really the point,” Leney told Insurance Business. “This is about raising awareness and much needed money for Vinnies and the wonderful job they do for homeless people.”

Marsh will also hold a charity trivia night to support Leney’s $25,000 fundraising goal with the CEO already having raised more than $18,000.

More than 100,000 Australians spend each night on the streets with one in 200 people sleeping rough at some point in their lifetime.

While Leney noted that one night in the elements provides barely a small insight into the life of the homeless, he said that anyone could find themselves on the streets due to a series of unfortunate circumstances.

“One of the things about this night is it is not just about sleeping out in the cold, it is a hell of an education session as well,” Leney continued.

“You imagine what it would be like if this was your lot, every single night.”
