Brokers have been encouraged to attend a series of forums to be held in North Queensland by the
Insurance Council of Australia (ICA).
The seven events will be held throughout July and the ICA has invited local councillors and politicians to attend the forums, as well as encouraging other insurance professionals to attend.
The forums are designed to help communities in flood and cyclone risk areas learn more about their insurance coverage.
Attendees will be provided with a briefing from the ICA on issues and risks facing each location and the impact on insurance. They will also be given the opportunity to speak one-on-one to an insurance expert about their personal insurance situation.
Rob Whelan, ICA CEO, said that the forums will help boost customer knowledge of the industry in areas where they need it most.
“Though insurers are working hard to help families and businesses rebuild and recover, the industry often hears common questions and misconceptions about insurance, especially as it relates to natural disasters,” Whelan said.“The forums are being held in seven key communities to provide information on insurance and risks, bust some myths and hear from policyholders.”
Topics covered will include how insurance works, availability of cover, the impact cyclones and floods have on premiums and advice on how to lower premiums.
Over the past decade, the industry has paid more than $4.4 billion in flood and cyclone claims in North Queensland with the current cost of Cyclone Debbie at more than $800 million.
